Dr. Jorge E. Rodriguez’s (Dr. Jorge) life has been anything but ordinary. He was born in Havana, Cuba to Juan and Ofelia Rodriguez. Juan was many things, a dentist, a baseball pitcher and a fervent anti-Castro militant. Juan, after having been jailed during the Bay of Pigs invasion by the Castro regime, immigrated the family to the USA. Juan went back to dental school, instilling in Dr. Jorge one of his most important “life-guiding” beliefs: it is never too late to achieve your dreams. It just takes hard work to achieve what appears unobtainable. In other words, it takes thinking and living outside the box.
In search of the American dream, the next decade took the Rodriguez family to many different parts of the United States. Dr. Jorge was able to see and appreciate much of the country, from the racially volatile world of 1960s Detroit, to the hustle and bustle of 1970s New York City, to the vast immigrations that occurred in South Florida during the early 1980’s, to the birth of the HIV epidemic in the mid 1980’s. These events were instrumental in forming his future views about medicine and society’s role in health care. He concluded that people, medicine and politics are inseparable. Dr. Jorge lectures as clearly and passionately about the prevention of colon cancer as he does about the role of government in health care. You may not always agree him, but you will always understand where he is coming from and why. He is a straight shooter in a world of curved answers.
Dr. Jorge has always been a scholar and a leader. He was Student Council President of the inner city high school and graduated in the top 1% of a class of 1200 students. Dr. Jorge also graduated magna cum laude from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL, with a degree in chemistry. He then attended the University of Miami School of Medicine, where he was Student Body President. It was in medical school in 1981 where Dr. Jorge treated his first patients with AIDS and viral hepatitis. In medical school, leaders in the fields of virology and hepatology mentored him and created an indelible effect. It was here that he got his first look at the importance of clinical research in treating and curing such diseases. He worked summers doing research at the Papanicolaou Cancer Research Institute. He chose to pursue Internal Medicine and did his internship and residencies at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Jorge finished his medical education with a fellowship in gastroenterology at Baylor School of Medicine in Dallas.
Life and opportunity took Dr. Jorge to California, where he began practicing gastroenterology in 1988. At that time, the AIDS epidemic was exploding. It was then that he modified his practice, from his chosen field of gastroenterology to general medicine and HIV. In those 25 years he has developed an international reputation as a primary care physician and as a researcher in the war against HIV and Hepatitis C. He has been part of some of the most groundbreaking HIV research of the past two decades. He was one of the founders of the American Academy of HIV Medicine and former president of California Chapter of the American Academy of HIV Medicine. He also served as President of the Board of Directors of AIDS Services Foundation Orange County.
His gift at oratory and simplifying even the most complicated topics has made him a very sought after speaker. Dr. Jorge frequently lectures about HIV and Hepatitis C in Spanish to migrant workers throughout Southern California. He is also a frequent medical guest on national news and talk shows, discussing various health topics. Dr. Jorge often jokes that his friend, the great actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg “discovered” him. After meeting him in Los Angeles she became such a fan of this plain talking Cuban, that from 2007 to 2009, he was the popular host of the “One Hundred Years to Live” medical segment on her nationally syndicated radio show, “Wake Up with Whoopi.” It was after this amazing opportunity that the American “entertainment business’ took note of Dr. Jorge. This charismatic, bilingual, no nonsense physician, who could talk clearly and correctly about any medical topic, was soon in high demand as a “media” medical expert. He has since appeared countless times on CNN News, Anderson Cooper 360, The Doctors, The View, The Dr. Phil Show, The Dr. Oz Show, Pierce Morgan, The Montel Williams Show and Good Morning America. Many of these appearances can be seen in the “Media” section of this website.
Dr. Jorge is the author of the best selling book: The Acid Reflux Solution. As soon as this book came out it topped five of Amazon’s bestseller lists. It continues to be one of the premier books on treating heartburn. He is currently in the midst of writing another book for Ten-Speed Press/Crown Books, tentatively titled, The Diabetes Solution. It should be available on line and wherever books are sold in November 2014. It promises to be a monster best seller.
Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Jorge splits his time between two practices in Southern California, where he takes care of everything from heartburn, to heart attacks, to heart break. He is also principal investigator for scores of HIV and Hepatitis C clinical research trials.
Dr. Jorge strongly believes in the responsibility of all people to control their own health. He feels that with plain, correct information and with the guidance of a good health professional there is no reason we should not all live happy, healthy lives. But first it takes learning to think and live outside the box.
Dr. Jorge always makes everything so easy to understand..
The Acid Reflux Solution is a must read for anyone looking for natural ways to reduce heartburn.

I am thrilled to announce that Tenspeed Press/Crown Books and I have signed a contract for me to write The Diabetes Solution. This book will be THE comprehensive book on how to treat and prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Did you know that over 50 million Americans have either pre-diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes? Here is an excerpt from the book:
“My father was a closet diabetic. I always knew he had high blood sugar, but no disease was ever mentioned. It wasn’t until I was in the middle of writing The Diabetes Solution that I asked my mom whether dad had been diabetic. “He took insulin twice a day,” she said. I was astonished. I am a physician, a specialist in internal medicine, who should have known his father’s medical history, but it wasn’t until she divulged this information that it all started to make sense.
In his disease progression, my father was the stereotypical candidate for Type 2 diabetes. During his youth he was a thin, baseball playing, athletic, Errol Flynn look-alike--a very handsome, dynamic man. As he aged, however, he became sedentary and stopped exercising. He began to develop the midlife paunch common to so many men. By the time he was in his late forties he had his first heart attack. By the time he was sixty he developed congestive heart failure, and he died of cardiac arrest within the year. Losing him broke my heart. My dad was one in a million, and twenty years later I still miss him very much.
As a physician, I know that over 50 percent of diabetes sufferers end up dying of cardiovascular disease. But I also know we have so many tools to help prevent early-stage pre-diabetes from advancing to the full-blown disease and many medications available to control Type 2 DM and prevent or ameliorate the long-term side effects. I can’t help but wonder how much of what happened to my father could have been prevented or put off for years if his diabetes had been treated earlier or if he had changed his lifestyle. The same can be asked of 80 million Americans who are living […but slowly dying,) with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Because diabetes develops slowly and doesn’t hurt, far too many people are unaware they are suffering from this silent killer. Most of us would prefer to look the other way when it comes to dealing with an unpleasant health issue if we can avoid it. Since screening is not mandatory and many people skip their annual physicals, it’s easy for blood sugar to creep up, along with blood pressure and weight without any healthcare professional sounding an alarm. And not all doctors chose to discuss weight with their patients. A pity because overweight and obesity go hand in hand with Type 2 DM, which is why the disease is running rampant.”
I am very proud of how this book is coming along. Crown Books expects it to be the essential book on Type 2 Diabetes when it comes out in November of 2014. You can not preorder The Diabetes Solution yet; but you can get on our email list (see below) and we will inform you as soon as it is ready to be pre-ordered….and all estimates are that the first printing will be a sell out. We will keep you informed.
My Upcoming Book:
Heal Heartburn and Lose Weight, Naturally
If you suffer from acid reflux, you’re not alone. More than 50 million Americans have GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, and while antacids can be effective for short-term relief, they can also cause dangerous medical conditions if they’re used for more than the recommended fifty days at a time. Luckily, The Acid Reflux Solution offers a simple plan to help you gradually and safely reduce—and eventually eliminate—the need for pills while alleviating your heartburn.
In this combination medical guide and cookbook, gastroenterologist Jorge E. Rodriguez, MD, has teamed up with registered dietitian and food writer Susan Wyler to present a three-step program to heal heartburn naturally. This isn’t a formal diet plan—no calorie counting required—but you’ll probably shed some pounds while following The Acid Reflux Solution because these recipes were designed for good health. In fact, Dr. Jorge has not only healed his own heartburn since developing this plan, but he has also lost more than 30 pounds!
In step one you make some simple lifestyle modifications, like raising the head of your bed, loosening your belt, and eating less but more often. These are easily achievable goals that you can start working on today. In step two, you start eating to avoid reflux. With 100 high-fiber, low-fat, portion-controlled recipes to choose from, this step is the most delicious—and surprising. The list of foods that actually trigger acid reflux is smaller than you might think, which means you can enjoy meals that you probably thought were off limits, like Cuban Black Bean Soup, Grass-Fed Beef and Portobello Blue Cheese Burgers, Asian Barbecued Chicken, and even Spaghetti and Meatballs.
In the final step, you reduce the dosage and frequency of the medications you were taking to control your heartburn because you won’t need them anymore. The Acid Reflux Solution combines the latest medical research with reflux-friendly recipes to help you feel great, lose weight, and live heartburn free.
